What is storage wall?

What is storage wall is a question we do get asked when we suggest installing it. As you can see from the initial picture above, it is a partition wall built from floor to ceiling, but has shelves in it. The system combines the functional requirement of a partition wall to be a room divider and the function of the full height cupboard. If you add the cost of a partition wall, to the cost of a full height cupboard then storage wall will be cheaper, and it also looks better as well.

The traditional places for storage wall are in meeting rooms and boardrooms, some of the projects that we have posted on this website have storage wall in them. Please have a look at some of the projects on our Storage Wall page for a better description and as this will give you a better idea of what can be done. On that page are also some projects with photographs so you can see what the systems look like.

  • We can introduce a pass door through the wall.
  • Glazing can be included
  • One of the most popular features is the construction of an Audio / Visual bay within the wall. This is ideal for either showing a screen, or hiding it, and including all of the presentation and sound systems within the wall. When not in use it is all put away.
  • We can build a back panel to the wall so that it finishes off the back of the cupboard in a matching wood finish
  • The internals are imensly flexible, pull out frames, lateral filing, plain shelves, or even a coat rack and hangers is possible.
  • Finishing the front of the doors we can also apply a digital image so that the doors look hidden.

Office Design and Fit Out in Swindon

Client: One Technologies
Value: £260k

We carried out an Office design and fit out fit out project for One Technologies Ltd in Swindon,Wiltshire. The project included creating ideas for the design, detail specification and documents, planning and then organising the work which was completed on time within budget.

The customer is an American company that wanted to set up and office in the UK. They had a breakfast bar in their office in Dallas, we tried to replicate the way they work in the US so part of their culture of how they work comes across into the UK. The customer is a web based company and the new office will be receiving inbound calls so is basically a call center. The image of a phone box in the reception is intended to reflect this and is one reason why there is a  concentration of desks in space. The digital image that is printed on heavy textured wall covering. Desk footprint was important in getting the right numbers in, and we have designed this so they can increase the numbers easily, all of the future space planning has been done. You will see the grey wallpaper in the office is very textured to give some personality to the paper and help with sound performance.

The activities included Office Design, Project Management, CDM regulations, Building Regulations, contracts, stripping out work, demountable glass partitioning, decorations, design of a breakfast bar, supply and fit of all office furniture, air conditioning new and changes to existing, ventilation changes, lighting, electrical work, data cabling, supply and fitting of the communications cabinet, cctv, access control, audio visual equipment and connection, storage wall and flooring changes. We also supplied all of the office furniture, screens, cupboards, plants, graphics, chairs and monitor arms.

Preparation work.

Much of the initial time on the project was spent exploring different layouts and seeing how the space could work. Care was taken in seeing how the customer wanted to use the space to have an area where people could relax and have teas and coffees.

Design Visuals.

We have covered elsewhere in this website our view on visuals. Please click this link for more explanation as to the difference between drawing work, space planning and 3d visuals. As a large proportion of the cost of the project focused around the breakfast bar we felt creating visuals was really important. The breakfast bar being an essential part of the office design. The film taken of this project reinforces how much the finished build reflects the initial visuals we produced for the project. Although they are in the film clip, they can be seen below:

Specifications, contract and planning.

The next step was to provide much more detail in the the specifications in the form of written documents. We had a commercial contract drawn up, as well as produced a full build specification document detailing every aspect of the build. Due to the amounts of money involved £250k +, we produced a project plan which showed the phases of when payments were due to be made depending on when various parts of the project were delivered. The final document was a detailed Gantt chart showing project timelines, dates, slack periods, completion dates and contingencies. Also built in were times required for the American IT team to visit and have all of the computer equipment installed and configured.

Build Photographs.

As you can see from the photographs there was quite a bit to organise, in particular we had to follow the progress to a programme, as well as maintaining dates that had to fit in with the American IT team visiting the UK to install the server the programme had to be met for the financial reasons in order to maintain a steady flow of payments coming to us from the USA. The main office design and fit out project for us was only one small part in order to get the office up and working. The customers IT people only had 3 days to install all of the equipment, so all of the infrastructure cabling, power, air conditioning, cabinets and of course all of the security access controls and cameras had to be fully working before they came over to visit. They were bringing with them a special server built by Dell to handle the call volumes anticipated in the office and the server itself cost 7 figures.

We are very please with the final office design and fit out. If you have not seen the video in the first part of this page then you can also see it here by here by clicking this text..

Moving / expanding or have problems with your existing office space?

Many offices have problems with sound, problems with fitting enough people in, and may look dated and need reworking which is where we can help. From an initial brief as to what the problems are to the final completed office we can carry out everything that you need inside an office. In the project above we used demountable partitioning but using a special type of glass to enhance sound performance. The system was also a propriety demountable partition system called Komfort Polar. The glass wall was double glazed, with seamless glass joints for a smooth simple look.

Why Demountable Partitions in Office Refurbishments?

  1. Demountable partitions are tax efficient in that they are seen as movable items and so can be treated differently in writing down allowances in the accounts, we can also lease elements of office refurbishments. Anything that can be moved.
  2. We mainly lease Demountable Partitions as they are movable, this spreads the costs of having the work done as Demountable Partitions always cost more than customers think.
  3. Leasing of movable items is very tax efficient and Cre8tive can provide illustrations, please contact us for further information.
  4. Most landlords insist on demountable partitions in an office as it is much easier to take them out should the tenant renting the space leave for any reason. The benefit is that is saves making a huge amount of mess and destruction that would be need with a conventional stud and plasterboard constructed wall.

Not sure what to do?

Please give us a call and we can help with any aspect of interior office fit out, along with space planning and design work.

Office Fit Out in West Super Mare

Client: John Hodge Solicitors
Value: £45k

Office Fit out at Morston Court

John Hodge Solicitors required an office fit out in Weston Super Mare. They had previously occupied a prestigious location in Weston Super Mare and wanted to maintain the location but the property available next door was not big enough to accommodate all of the administration tasks that need to be carried out in a busy office.

The solution was to take on the building next door which was the old Choices video store and is covered in another new item. (click this link), and to take on a modern office which needed fitting out. This post relates to the fitting out of Morston Court.

Office Fit out work

The main building is rented, and so a requirement from landlords is that the partitioning needs to be demountable. The condition of the existing space was pretty good, with cabling and lighting already in place. We did have to re- cable all of the Cat5 data and voice sockets to the comms cabinet position, as well as re-position power sockets in the perimeter trunking so that there appeared in the correct places. All we had to do was to fit some partitioning as well as some storage wall for the main meeting room. We also had to build a small kitchen.

Office Design and fit out in Chippenham

Client: Redlynch Leisure
Value: £27k

Office Refurbishment in Chippenham

Redlynch Leisure wanted to have a new open plan space to have an office design and fit out carried out. The initial space was completely empty and required a complete design with fitting out work, consisting of Interior space planning and design, demountable partitions, storage wall, carpets, creation of canteen area, flooring, decoration and minor electrical work. We also supplied all of the office furniture which was in keeping with the design of the building.

Design and drawing work

We came up with a few different ideas, the customer in the end went for a more traditional layout.

The office design and fit out project also required us to submit plans to Building Control for approval which we obtained on behalf of the client. The major aspects of this office refurbishment project is in using materials which were complimentary to the design of the building. We chose Komfort Klassic timber demountable system which matched the finish of the barn styled windows. The storage wall was chosen to take the place of a partition wall and a cupboard, saving on cost, and fitting with the finishes of the partitions, outside of building and the furniture, which we also supplied and installed. We also had to alter the plumbing and move a radiator in order to install the partitioning. We provided a complete package and all the customer had to do was to move in.

We also put the customer in touch with an IT company and telephone systems company to handle the requirements which we work closely with in projects.

Storage Wall

We designed into this project a product called storage wall. Storage wall combines the function of a cupboard with a partition wall. So we build it up to the ceiling and as the width is around 400mm the thickness of the wall with the contents gives really good sound insulation. It is still demountable, so can be taken down and rebuilt.

Why Demountable Partitioning?

Another key element of this work was that the partitions had to be demountable. There are several reasons why this type of partition should be used in office projects:

Demountable Partitioning.

This project included the installation of a new Timber Demountable Partitioning System in order to create private meeting space while giving a clean professional look to the existing corridor. The project was fairly unusual in that the partition system although demountable; is actually made from Timber. the basic framework is still metal stud and plasterboard and the timber trims are fitted around the walls, as well as full timber door frames used to match in with the rest of the product.

New Storage Wall with Safe

Client: T Green metals Chippenham
Value: £3.8k

Storage Wall

Storage wall is a very useful solution to providing full height to ceiling storage. The customers’ storage needs had outgrown their tall Bisley cabinets and drawer systems. They contacted us as they had been happy with work we had previously done for them about 5 years ago.

A metal framed version of the wall was chosen for extra strength. This also allows flexibility for shelves to be added and taken away as needed. It was important to integrate a safe within the cupboards for security. The added weight of the safe was reinforced for support. When the cupboard door is closed the safe is neatly hidden away in its own compartment.

While designing the storage wall we had to take into account that new three compartment trunking was being fitted. Therefore we offset the cabinets from the wall and built in a 300mm wide panel to allow the trunking to go behind.

Finally, the storage wall was finished in a light wooden veneer to match the customers existing furniture.

What is Storage Wall?

There are several versions available at the moment, most are panel based, so very much like your flat pack furniture product. The system combines the function of a cupboard with a partition wall. So we build it up to the ceiling and as the width is around 400mm the thickness of the wall with the contents gives really good sound insulation. It is still demountable, so can be taken down and rebuilt.

Storage Wall to save on space.

Client: APS Mortgages
Value: £12.5k

Based in Edison Park in Swindon APS Mortgages were very active in the sub prime mortgages market. Although no longer about we carried out some nice projects for them.

The requirement for this project was to subdivide the office space with some partitions, and provide a line of storage for archive files. We therefore selected storage wall which is a full height built in wall that is also a cupboard saving on the overall costs of purchasing walls and cupboards separately.

The back wall of the storage wall in the canteen also had veneered panels matching the front, and the storage is fully floor to ceiling maximising the use of space. Unfortunately we do not have any construction photographs for this project. Internally there is great flexibility on what you can have inside. We can build an audio – visual suite, with room for a TV, and presentation equipment such as white boards and flip charts. The shelves inside can be configured so that you can have the lower sections as pull out frames to accommodate conventional files that you would normally have in a filing cabinet. Special shelves are made that a called combination shelves, as the return lip underneath allows you to hook suspension files laterally. This method of storing files is much more efficient than conventional filing cabinet storage.

Office Refurbishment in Weston Super Mare

Client: John Hodge Solicitors
Value: 75k

An office refurbishment in Weston Super Mare was requested by John Hodge Solicitors. They had recently purchased a video store just out of the town center. At the same time they purchased another building at Morston Court, separate project. This building was the customer facing part of the business so the old store needed to represent the corporate identity but also be practical.

One of the first problems was that the whole internal space needed stripping out. They also needed a reception areas, some client meeting rooms near the reception and an admin area close by. Upstairs there was also a requirement for office space.

As the building use was going to be for public access, see clients from the general public, disabled access doors and a disabled toilet needed to be considered, as well as the car park out the front, with a slope, handrail and markings.

Storage Wall and Demountable Partitions

Client: Cole Easdon Consultants Swindon
Value: £10k

Storage wall with demountable partitions

Cole Easdon approached us with a couple of requirements for their new office in Swindon. The first was to construct a couple of office but they also had a major problem with storage. We realised that we could utilise the full height of the ceiling and use a product called storage wall, which is a full height cupboard constructed and fitted to the underside of the suspended ceiling which acts like a partition. We then built some demountable partitions off the storage wall to solve the problem.
